Is it true that antiperspirant deodorant can cause cancer?

My boyfriend told me that antiperspirant deodorant can cause cancer because of the active ingredient: aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex gly (aka the antiperspirant). This makes no sense to me. Why would they be allowed to sell something that can cause cancer? (although, they do sell cigarettes.. but still.. this is DEODORANT! most people know that cigarettes can cause cancer, but deodorant? really?)
